Errors can occur when you try to install an application, or open, save, or print a file if the hard disk has damaged sectors or is very fragmented. Use a disk utility (for example, Apple Disk Utility or Symantec Norton Utilities) to check for and repair damaged sectors on each hard disk.
The best way to keep your HDD in good condition is to use the CHKDSK utility. This program checks your disk and fixes hard drive errors. CHKDSK scans the hard drive, corrects logical sector errors, marks bad sectors that cannot be fixed and moves data to safe, healthy places on the hard drive. It’s a handy tool, but this utility does not operate automatically.
CheckDisk (ChkDsk) and Disk Defragmenter are two utilities Microsoft provides with its operating systems for routine maintenance on drives. Check Disk is a disk analysis and repair program you can use to check your hard disk for logical and physical errors. ChkDsk checks and fixes problems in the following areas: File Allocation Table (FAT).

The Disk Error-Checking tool checks the integrity of files and folders by scanning the hard disk surface for physical errors. If errors are detected, the tool repairs them. You can access CHKDSK through the Disk Defragmenter or by entering CHKDSK on the command line.
